A historical novel about World War II and the bravery of young people caught in the middle of it.

London is being bombed by the Nazis. When Olive has a near death experience her mother decides to evacuate her together with her brother to the countryside. They find refuge in the lighthouse of Budmouth Point, a little village in Devon. Cliff is very happy that he can finally have a dog. But not everyone is happy.
"Esther's had a terrible time of it. Everyone she loves has either died or disappeared, or, failing that, lives in another country. Imagine what that feels like, can you?"
Olive's older sister, Sukie, disapears but she leaves behind an encripted note. Olive tries to solve the code and find her sister. There were some other challenges for Olive, like quicksands, bully, loss of father, and sister. But she managed to stay as a nice and carring person.
"German or not, the pilot's a human being, so we should treat him the same way we'd hope they'd treat a pilot of ours. Imagine if it was your son or brother, or ... your father, I pleaded. You'd want things done properly, wouldn't you?"
Stories about a war are not very easy to read but we need to be reminded how terrible they are.
