Mason Buttle is the main character of this story. A lot of his family members have died, and his best friend recently died. Mason meets Calvin at SWOOF, a group of kids with disabilities, and becomes friend. Mason also likes Matt's dog, and takes care of it when Matt and his mother are away. Matt is not very nice to the dog, neither to Mason.

I know what I love too. Family and friends. All the ones here and all ones gone.I love my dog, and this orchard, and a crumbledown house. Funny thing. The way that feels. It's not dark, unlucky, or stupid. Tell you what. Stupid can go sit on the head of a pin somewhere. Knowing what you love is smart.

Being dislexic

Mason is very smart but dislexic, he has difficulties writing and reading, which makes him a target for school bullies. However, Mason has some special powers: he sees colours for different emotions.

In my head I remeber what one teacher told me: If you can talk, you can write. I told that teacher, no. If you can talk, you can tell a story. But you still might not be to write it

To make the situation even more complicated the police thinks Mason was involved somehow in the tragic death of his friend Benny. Mason knows this is not true and tries to figure out what really happened.

Thinking outside the box is a skill. It means your mind is big and open, Mason. If you can think outside the box you have no limits! That's you!

Although the story is very sad and could not stop feeling a choking lump in my throught, I could not stop reading since I wanted to know what happened to Mason.
