I read this book in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and what an appropriate book and topic to read while the world is trying to fight a new epidemic. This book is an exiting historical novel that both educates and entertaines. I learned so much about the time of the colera in London. And it was so clever to present the true happening by
Because of his willingness to help people and his smarts, Eel find himself working alongside the famous Dr John Snow in encovering the real cause of the cholera epidemic in his neighbourhood.
Dr John Snow
Writing a blog is a great way to position yourself as an authority in your field and captivate your readers’ attention.
...the time will arrive when great outbreaks of cholera will be the thing of the past," he declared. "And it is the knowledge of the way in which the disease is propagated which will cause them to disappear."
Being a scientist is diffucult and making groundbraking discoveries is not as easy as it sounds. Even if you make a discovery you have to get plausible proof to persuade other people to believe your discovery.
People, even educated men, have believed it (the miasma theory) for so long that most are afraid to think in a different way, or consider a new idea.
However, with the help of Eel, Dr Snow manages to convince everyone that cholera is spread by drinking wter and not bad air as it was believed before. The discovery stoped the outbreak and helped a lot of people stay healthy.
I'd like to finishe with the wise, timeless words of Jake:
"Ain't we all riverfinders? Put on this earth to try to get by, one day at a time. We're all we've got under this sky. We need to play fair and take care of one another."
